30 Before 30

I'm turning 30 in 2017. To celebrate, I decided to create a list of 30 things to do before I turn 30. Some of these are pretty easy, some a bit more of a challenge- but I'm determined! I will try to update every month. I am looking forward to new adventures and to making memories while I cross items off this list!
  • Run (or be ready for) a 10k
I mastered the 5k last summer. And even though I'm taking a few months off from running, I hope to get back into it by March and start training for a 10k. I'm not sure if I'll be ready by my birthday, but I hope to run that 10k before my wedding in September.
  • Attend a Yoga or Silent Retreat
If anyone knows of one coming up, let me know!
  • Make a gourmet meal
I'm a pretty decent cook but I stick to easy stuff. At least once, I want to attempt to make a gourmet meal.
  • Try Crossfit
My Y offers Crossfit (for an extra fee) and while I don't think it's for me, I want to try it at least once.
  • See a play or musical
Even if it's a community theatre show, I'm long overdue!
  • Pay off my credit card
Over the last few years I have worked really hard to increase my credit score and decrease debt. Right now my debt includes student loans, my car payment, and one credit card. I'm determined to get that credit card paid off.
  • Try "Cycle" class at the Y
This should be a little bit easier, these classes are free with my membership-I've just been too intimidated to try!
  • Be a mentor
I have wanted to do this for years, just haven't gone through with it. This is the year!
  • Try a new restaurant
There are so many new restaurants popping up. This should be a pretty easy task.
  • Take at least one free online course
Not sure what the topic will be, but I'm going to try.
  • Take a day trip (or two) with Tom to a nearby city
While I would love to attempt to travel out of state with Tom, that's just not going to happen with our wedding around the corner. Instead, I'd love to take a day trip to Grand Rapids or another Michigan city.
  • Read at least 10 books
My goal for the entire year is 30, and I'm pretty confident I can get 10 read by my birthday.
  • Send out 30 handwritten cards, postcards, letters, etc.
This is something I always do around Lent, but I may break it up and do it a couple times a year.
  • Submit a piece of writing to a magazine/website/podcast
    Pretty self explanatory.
  • Learn to say no
I'm trying so hard to practice saying no to things that do not serve me!
  • Be more active in Church
I want to attend Mass more, become a Lector, and maybe join a prayer group.
  • Cook one of my grandma's recipes
Another one that should be pretty easy. The challenge will be choosing one!
  • Go to more local community events
My community does tons of events- at my library, at the college across the street, downtown, etc. I need to take advantage! I often don't go just because Tom is working. I want to learn it's okay to go by myself.
  • Do something outside of my comfort zone
I'm not quite sure what this will be. I thought about putting "ride a horse".....but I'm so terrified of that I'm not sure I should put that in writing.
  • Eat vegan for a week
I have seriously considered adopting a vegan diet, but I just don't think I'm ready. I would love to explore it for a week and see what recipes I can come up with!
  • Declutter
I need to get rid of clothes, of "stuff", of documents on my computer, etc.
  • Get my old t-shirts made into a quilt
I have been wanting to do this for years and I know exactly who can do it for me! Just need to actually do it!
  • Treat myself to a spa day
I'm talking facial, pedicure, AND massage. It will be pricey, but worth it.
  • Buy myself a new laptop
My personal laptop "died". For now Tom and I share one but I would love to buy myself a new laptop.
  • Take each of my parents to something they really want to go to
I know the band Chicago is coming to town in July and that my dad would love to go- and I'd be happy to take him! Would love to find something for each of them and have a "date night".
  • Go to a local con/expo
I think I'm actually crossing this off this weekend- twice! Going to a "healthy living" expo on Saturday and a Bridal expo on Sunday. But open to more!
  • Attend a class (use groupon!)
Not sure what kind of class- I'm thinking dance or art.
  • Attend a fancy dinner/gala with Tom- or go out for a fancy dinner!
I think it would be so fun to get all gussied up and go out to a fancy gala- or just a fancy dinner.
  • Ask 30 people to tell me an album or a movie that means a lot to them- and then listen to or watch it!
I'm the kind of person who loves to share music/movies I love with other people- and I want to hear what is meaningful to my friends!
  • Try to complete this list, but understand that it's okay if I don't and just live my life :)

My 2016 Christmas Card Letter

At about 5 pm today, exactly one week before Christmas, I thought that I should go buy some Christmas cards to send out to my friends and family. But.... I mean...it's one week before Christmas. I am traveling for work the next two days. So by the time I would actually sit down and write the cards, it would be the 21st or 22nd. My cards, if I got them done, likely wouldn't get to people on time.

So instead, I found myself here. On my blog. I'm going to do a simple review of my year, a simple review of the year in general, and then share my holiday wishes to each and every one of you.

If you take away the world tragedies that occurred in 2016 (more on that in a minute), I had a pretty great year. I started it off by chopping 8 inches off my hair and slapping braces on my teeth....because why not change things up? The first few months of the year were focused on the planning of my best friend Sam's wedding, which was on April 2nd. We threw her two showers and a bachelorette party between January and February. It kept me busy, but boy did we have a lot of fun along the way. I loved every minute of it, even the stressful times. It was an honor and a privilege to play such a big part in her big day, and to be able to grow closer to some of my other friends through that. For as long as I have known Sam I've known that she is a romantic, a dreamer, a lover, and someone who likes to have a good time. Her wedding was all of those things and more. I couldn't be happier for her and Eric as they  approach their one year anniversary.

When spring rolled around, Tom and I found a great place to live together, starting the next chapter of our story. I switched gyms, I got back into yoga, I was working crazy hours as we were in our busy Relay for Life season. I grew closer with my coworkers, particularly Jenn, who quickly became one of my very best friends.

Summer meant spending time by the pool, going to concerts, going for a run every Sunday morning, having my annual "Girl's Weekend" with some of my dearest friends, and welcoming my baby niece Cara into the world, just two days before my 29th birthday.

Oh, and I also got engaged. Two days after Cara was born (so... my birthday, if you're playing along), I was sitting at home, waiting for it to be time to go to the 98 Degrees (yes, I'm serious) concert, when Tom walked in from work, took off his boots, and asked me to marry him. I knew the big question was coming soon. We had open conversations about it. So I wasn't that surprised, but somehow, the tears still came. I was completely overjoyed. I've known for quite a while that Tom is the one I want to spend the rest of my life with. That night we celebrated with some close friends (and 98 Degrees), and the celebrations continued throughout the weekend. We felt so much love coming from so many people. We quickly went into wedding planning mode and got some of the biggest things checked off the list right away.

With fall comes another peak at work, and I once again found myself working plenty of late nights and weekends. I kept running every Sunday until it got too cold, I went on my annual retreat with Sisters and Associates of Mercy, and I tried to spend as much time with family and friends as I could.

Through all of this, I am very, very grateful to say that my dad, who has battled lung cancer with brain metastasis since 2013, has remained relatively healthy.  We had a few scares along the way, but the doctors have always found a way to make his disease stable again. I can't say it's been any easier, or that I haven't had my moments of break downs over his stupid cancer, but I also know that we have been very lucky. He continues to fight and we continue to stand by him and carry him through this.

So while overall it's been a great year for me personally, I will admit that I have had my personal struggles. There are times I am way too hard on myself, or I get incredibly anxious and feel my heart nearly coming out of my chest, or there are times when I feel an overwhelming sadness and fog. I know I am not alone in this, and although it can be hard to talk about, I am not ashamed, either. It's part of who I am. I have found ways to work through these, and I know that it will be a lifelong thing. I am grateful for Tom, family and friends who helped me through my toughest moments.

So now that you learned a little bit more about my year... let's talk about 2016 in general.

It was rough, right? I think that all of us, no matter what side we are on politically, have felt the divide. There was the deadly shooting in Orlando, the instances of police brutality, the instances of police being killed, human trafficking on the rise, the Flint water crisis, and the election. It seemed like nothing but negativity was being put out into the world for a while. I remember one particular week where I just didn't want to get out of bed. I couldn't believe the world we were living in was so violent and scary, and that there was so much hate. There were many days when I felt helpless, hopeless, and just plain frustrated. I could go on, but I think we all get it, and we've all heard it. 2016 wore us out.

Many of us are now asking the question "where do we go from here?" and "what do we do now?". I spent a lot of time thinking about this, too. I wrote about it on this blog a few times, so forgive me for being repetitive. But when it comes to 2017, here is my hope for all of us:

I hope we don't give up, or give in. I hope we continue to fight for what is right. I hope that we can love ourselves and one another with everything we've got left in us. I hope we are refueled and re energized.  I hope that we have not let the tragedies of 2016 rip the goodness that is left in us. Because we need that goodness if we want peace. I hope we don't ignore our neighbors when they need us. I hope we take time to listen and to see what is going on around us. I hope that our passion and our words move to action. I hope that each of us can live a life where we are healthy, we are happy, and we are at peace.

As you are planning for the new year and choosing resolutions and your focus, think about where you may be able to do the most good. If you've been neglecting self care, this is the year you change that. Take care of yourself. You are worth it. If you can do just a little bit more to make the world a better place, find ways to do that.

Personally, I always find the idea of a new year a little bit scary, but that's coming from someone who doesn't like change. I'm terrified of what's to come, I'll be honest. But instead of spending every minute of every day in fear, I let myself have my moments where I can break down or be scared or just lay in bed for a few hours, and then I get back to work. Because there is always work to be done. Whether it's actual work for my job, or taking care of myself or my family or spending time with friends or volunteering, those are all things that I have to do to keep going. And I must keep going.

I hope you keep going, too, even when it feels impossible.

We'll do this, together.

Merry Christmas.

Give Love and Receive love.

A few weeks ago, I was texting a good friend of mine while I was getting ready for an event. Said event was making me anxious. I was going to be seeing people whom I had not seen or spoken to in quite some time. I was not on great terms with some of these people, either. I was getting nervous for how it would all play out. When I told my friend this, she replied

"Just go in expecting to love and to receive love".

It really hit me. I took her words to heart, and I tried to live them out as best I could. Unfortunately, there was a minor incident at the event that left me a bit tangled. It made me question some friendships and feel overall guilt and sadness over something that happened several years ago. I felt down about it for a day or so, but I kept going back to the words my friend had texted to me. And I decided that instead of rehashing and letting my emotions get the best of me, I had to let this go and turn it over. I silently forgave myself and the others involved and I let it go.

Although I'm not big on New Year's Resolutions, I think my friend's advice is going to become my mantra for 2016. In everything that I do, I am going to do my very best to love and to receive love.  It won't always be easy and I won't always succeed, but by focusing on love in this sense, I think my mindset will be positive and accepting. It also may bring me some surprising blessings. It may mean that I focus more on the good. That after a meeting or a party or even in my every day life, I can sit and reflect and think, okay, where was the love there? What did I give, and what did I get in return?

It will also come in handy in regards to my self and my self worth. I have a confession to make: Even losing 135 lbs does not suddenly make you love yourself without doubt. I still pick apart my flaws. It's something I am working on every single day. But it's HARD. I beat myself up mentally over the silliest things. In 2016 I am going to work on being kinder and more loving to myself. I am going to try to let the harsh words and negative thoughts go. The other night I was having a particularly down night. When the thoughts came through, I imagined them as balloons and I watched them float away. It was powerful, and something I am going to try to practice daily.

That is my focus for 2016. To love myself, to love others, and to find the love in every situation, and to accept the love that is given to me.

What is your focus for 2016? No matter what it is, I hope that you, too, find your days full of love.

Melinda Doolittle's song "Give" has the perfect message for my 2016 mantra.

3 Things for 2015.

I have a love/hate relationship with  New Year's Resolutions. Some years I'm all about it, making lists and game plans with bullet points. Other years I'm just like "I just want to LIVE, you know?". This year, I'm sort of in between.

There are three things- resolutions, I guess, I want to work on.

1. Money saving. I'm really bad at saving money. I don't even use my Kroger fuel points to get a discount for gas. Not that I don't want to, I just forget about it. But in 2015 I want to become more frugal. My ultimate goal is to be able to purchase a condo or house within the next two years...and if I want to do that, I have to save. Sure, it will be hard. With rent and a car payment and student loans and every other bill I have coming in. But, I know that I can do it because I know people who have done it. I just have to be more careful. I got a kickstart on this over the weekend. I studied my bank account statements and saw where I am wasting my money. I also did a little experiment and went on a spending freeze this weekend. I did not buy ANYTHING "extra". Not a cup of coffee, pack of gum, magazine, etc. I only spent money on groceries and bills. Tom and I did have a date night with dinner and a movie, but the movie was free with a gift card and dinner was on him because I made dinner the night before and purchased all the ingredients. (We try to take turns on things like that). Tom and I are very careful as a couple with our money...we take turns, split bills, and try to do things that are free or don't cost a lot of money. Anyway, the point is I usually spend about $60-$100 in a weekend on meals out, post workout coffee and bagel, extra things at the store that I don't really need. This weekend I spent about $20, and that was just on groceries for Friday night and Sunday night dinner.

I am going to continue my "spending freeze" in the sense that- if I don't need it, I won't buy it. I get in the really bad habit of going out for coffee even though I have a Keruig at home or grabbing lunch after the gym on a Saturday. My new habit is to eat almost every meal at home, with the exception of some date nights and nights out with friends. I do have to have some fun.

I also did some major research on coupons and reward programs, and I am simply just not using what's out there. I went to Kroger tonight for my grocery shopping for the week and with my rewards, a few coupons and buying store brand products, I spent about $15 less than I usually do for a week of groceries. Success!

I know it will be hard but it will also be worth it. If you have tips/ideas, feel free to share. I'm new at this!

2. This one is a little harder to admit, but we all have our flaws right? In 2015 I need to check my attitude. I have a bad habit of snapping at someone when I am under stress. Tom and my family usually get the brunt of this since it typically happens to the people closest to me. I used to think it was just me being a hormonal girl and that I would grow out if it, but as I've gotten a little older I HATE that I do it, and I want to stop, I think that, most of the time, it's coming from a place of anxiety. But I still don't want that to be an excuse, and I don't want to do it anymore. The past few times it's happened I have apologized- which I never used to do before. Before I would just storm off and shed a few tears. Now I've bitten the bullet and apologized when it's happened. And also have been trying to fix it. I've been trying a few methods: yoga (bonus: there is a great free class every Sunday in downtown Birmingham!), meditation, writing, etc. I'm not some kind of monster and it's not like it happens all the time, but it happens enough that I have decided to do something about it.

3. This may be obvious, but continue on my weight loss journey. In June 2013 I made a promise to myself that I would not stop until I reached my goal weight. I'm not there yet and there is no giving up! It's time to amp it up, actually. I am down 92 lbs, I want to get to 100 by our trip to Florida. After that, I will only have about 40 more lbs to make it to my goal weight. I don't care how long it takes me, but I will get there. And 2015 is not going to be about giving up, it's going to be about amping it up trying new things, pushing harder. I just read a quote today that actually fits me quite well:

Are you making resolutions this year?

Weight Loss Wednesday: New Year's Edition

Left side: July 2013. Right side: December 2013.

This is an exciting post for me. Because 2014 isn't a year of resolutions. I don't need to feel guilty for neglecting to do things in 2013. I started them. 2014 is going to be about finishing them.

My weight loss was, hands down, the greatest thing about 2013. It changed my life. When I first started, I had a few friends who worried about me. They worried I was putting too much pressure on myself, and that I should be happy with who I am, not so focused on changing myself. But the thing is, I had to change myself. My health was in danger and my mood was disturbing. My emotions were all over the place and my depression was seeping through.

Not anymore.

I can walk up the steps without getting out of breath. I can do a whole 45 minutes on the treadmill. I can fit into clothes 2-3 sizes smaller. I can look in the mirror and like what I see. I can wake up in the mornings with energy and excitement. My entire life has changed.

I never, ever thought I could do this. I've tried it all before, without any success, or with short term success. Then I gave up. This time, I didn't give up. I kept pushing, and I will keep pushing. There is no giving up this time and no turning back. There will be obstacles, and set backs, but I am on my way, and I will keep pushing, no matter what it takes.

Throughout this weight loss journey, most people have been totally supportive. But some have been- not so supportive. I've had people roll their eyes when I order broccoli instead of fries. I've had someone tell me I post too much about my weight loss journey, I've had people totally dismiss me when I talk about the gym. It used to hurt my feelings. But in those instances, I have to remember I am not doing this for anyone else but my damn self. Their words don't mean a thing to me, the only thing that matters is how I feel.

I know I have said this before, but I still have a very long way to go. 32 lbs is great, and you already know how great I feel, but in order to be in my best health and my best shape, I have about 100 more lbs to lose. I know that's a big number. I know that sounds like a lot. I know I may not even make that 100 lbs by this time next year (but I hope I do!). But I am not going to give up.

At first I thought I didn't have the strength to do this without other people helping me. I thought I would give up unless I had people constantly encouraging me. Now, I know I can do this, whether or not someone tells me "Hey, good job". I'm not saying I don't appreciate the encouragement, because I surely do, more than I can ever express. It gives me a little push, and it certainly makes me happy. But I don't solely depend on it. I depend on my own two legs and my brain.

But friends, even though I know I can do this, don't give up on me. I still love having cheerleaders. I will still be looking to celebrate my victories with you, just as I want to celebrate your victories with you.

In the comments, either on the blog or on facebook, or via a private message, I want you to tell me a goal you're working on. Maybe it's weight loss or writing or learning an instrument. Maybe it's finding a church or learning to cook or heck, maybe it's even beating a new level in candy crush. But I am going to keep a list of your goals, and pray for you every night. I can promise you that. So share it with me. I look forward to hearing them.

my wish for you

To my dear, sweet friends,
As 2013 comes to a close, I have been thinking about each of you and the tremendous impact you have each made on my life.  I wish that I could give each and every one of you a hug. A really, really tight hug.

I have hopes and wishes for you as you prepare to welcome the new year.

Friends, try your best to just be present in each moment. Listen carefully. Open your heart. Take life one hour at a time.

Don't be lazy, though, either. You won't get anywhere without hard work.stay focused, but do not beat yourself up for things which you cannot control. And accept the fact that you will make mistakes, but that's OKAY.

Love yourself and know that you deserve to be happy. Do what makes you happy. Surround yourself with people who will shower you with encouragement, love, and support. Pray not only for those you love and care about but also for the people who hurt you.

Let go of your past. Your past mistakes and heartbreaks do not define you. Forgive yourself and move on.

Immerse yourself in the things you love to do. Find the time to do them. Share your talents with others.

Express your gratitude. Tell others when they have done something positive  for you.

Be a good person. Share your heart with others. Treat everyone, including strangers, with love.

Be brave. Take chances. Push fear aside. Try something new.

But most of all, just be. Be your beautiful self.  Let your light shine.

Tonight, December 29th,  I challenge you to contact the people who have positively impacted your year and tell them thank you. When finished, give yourself a pat on the back for all you have accomplished in 2013.

one word

First of all- I had to take a day off of work today with no pay. That's how sick I am. I sent an email to my boss last night with my symptoms and said I didn't have enough pto and her response was "You come in tomorrow I'm driving you straight home. Stay in bed". Well, okay then. I've been hit with the flu. And not the tummy kind- but that kind where your whole head is so stuffed up you can't even turn it, you are shivering and then sweating, and you don't think you'll ever stop coughing. Mucinex, tea,   water, steam, and the neti pot have been my saving graces. I know a lot of people caught this nasty thing going around, and to you I say- I am so sorry. The last time I had a head flu this bad, it was during my MVC year. I stayed in bed for three straight days while Katie would come refill my juice cup, Nate would check my temperature and Dave would yell FEEL BETTER DONT DIE outside my door. After I finally recovered from that mess I found out Nate had gathered the other two and said "So listen, Megan might have the bird flu...". Ah, those were the days.

But yes. I took the day off today and I wish I could say I enjoyed it but I was pretty miserable. I rotated from my bed to the couch. setting timers on my phone to take my medicine. But I also spent some time thinking about 2013 (yes, again) and my goals. And then I read my friend Dean's blog and I was inspired by this whole One Word 365 revolution. So I checked out that site and was even more inspired and intrigued.

Then came the hard part. Picking a word. I actually have kind of done this for the past two years, just not formally. 2011 it was fearless, and 2012 it was conquer. But this time I'm picking one and sharing it with all of you. A million words went through my mind. Courage. Hope. Peace.

I wanted a word that combined action and persistence with calmness and listening. I had a hard time, but I finally settled on...

EMBRACE.

I am going to embrace myself, including my flaws. I am going to embrace those around me and support and encourage them. I am going to embrace change.  Embrace my passion. Embrace my life, embrace my health. Most of all I am going to embrace God's plan for me.

Embrace 2013.

it's gonna be a happy new year

I've got high hopes for 2013. I'm not sure why, but suddenly I'm one of those pretty hopeful optimistic people who thinks that this year really is going to be amazing.

Statistically odd years are better for me. I was born in 87; graduated from high school in 2005; college in 2009; landed my first real job in 2011. It seems I hit milestones and major events on the odd years. So call me crazy (or call me, maybe) but I actually think 2013 has a lot in store for me. I guess we won't know until this time next year, right?

I know I've already done a reflection on 2012. You read about my favorite moments, tweets, movies, and songs. But what I haven't said, or really admitted to many people, is how much I've seen myself grow in a year. I am a different person than I was last year at this time. A completely different person at that.  I am stronger and I am bolder. I talked on a popular morning radio show for 4 minutes. Old Megan would have ran and hid from that opportunity, but I took it and nailed it. I've stood up for myself numerous times in situations where I normally would have held back and let someone else do the talking. I am really proud of myself for making a commitment to becoming an associate to the Sisters of Mercy. I volunteer for a cancer outreach center and volunteer to co-lead my youth group even though I barely ever have time for myself- I am much more fueled and energized by giving back to other people than I am by lounging around by myself. I don't mean to toot my own horn here, but in reflecting on the year I think it's super important to note how much you have grown.

That being said, bring on 2013.  I love a fresh slate, the idea of hope and possibility, looking forward to the future.I can't say I have anything terribly exciting happening that I am sure about, aside from the fact that one of my best friends is moving into my house in a month, but I can say I am going to do my damn best to be happy and to treat everyone around me with kindness, love, and compassion.

I love all of you with all my heart. I sincerely hope that 2013 is good to you.
